Been out for a few FC St. Pauli games.
Normally first port of call is a bar called the Kapt 'N' Brass on Herbertstrasse, opposite is a burlesque club called the Queen Calavera that could be worth a visit, and just down is Heavy Metal bar called Night Light. Might sound off putting but had a great night in there on a stag about 15 years ago. Herbertstrasse is also where you'll find the girls in the windows. All these are just off the main Reeperbahn, loads of bars around there.
Further up the Reeperbahn you have GrosseFreiheit (Beatles Platz) quite a few clubs along there. Just around is a club called the Molotow, went in there on a british night all different rooms playing different styles from 80s chart hits to 90s Brit Pop.
Out on the main Reeperbahn and worth a visit is the Hamborger Veermaster that has a boat in the middle of the pub.
At the other end of the Reeperbahn is St. Pauli's ground the Millerntor. Next to it, and depending on the time of year, there is a fun fair called the Hamburger Dom.
Go round by the Rathaus area you have some decent restaurants and the designer shops.
To round off a late night into early morning I recommend the early morning fish market down by the river for breakfast. In the hall there'll be a bar and live band.
Would be recommendable to get a weekend pass for the S-Bahn. Most places are within walking distance, but when your on the piss their underground system might be a better call.

Good logical advice, but in reality it normally comes down to a 'when in Rome' type attitude. Foreigners on a stag do to London would probably go to Soho but probably don't frequent their own red lights.

I am from Hamburg and unfortunately it is a popular destination for stag weekends. Which means drinking hard and partying in the red light district and nothing else, same as you would do on a stag do in Prague, Tallinn, Riga, Bratislava, Budapest or God knows where.
You don't get to know a city by having a stag do. Loads of great things to see and do in Hamburg, it has something for everyone, but don't expect to get the best out of Hamburg by staying only in and around the red light district.

Approach the red light district like Soho
No true Londoner worthy of the description would ever be caught dead in one of those old Soho dives where you get a £100 bill for a gin and tonic
Take in the atmosphere, don't judge and avoid being a fucking amateur.
Easy innit?

Been a few times but not for a few years.
The red light district is a shithole but you have to and have a look. Don't get caught out by the dodgy places where you can end up with a massive bill just by chatting to a bird and buying her a drink. Davidstrasse was strange because the brasses could only approach you on one side of the road. If they get on your nerves just cross over to the police station side and they leave you alone. Herbertstrasse is the closed off road where the birds sit in the windows.
If you want to slow the pace down a bit during the day head towards Jungfernsteig (sp?) and have a wander around. There are a few bars overlooking the Alster (lake) and a lot of the sights, restaurants and shops are close by. It's a bit like the city but more civilised.
Hauptbarnhoff (sp?) is the mainline railway station and last time I was there it was junkie central on one side of the station where the hotels are.
Tap beer does not arrive quickly but it's good stuff. There are also a few micro breweries dotted around and they do some good falling over liquid.
Like all places it is much nicer if the sun is shining.

the looky looky/ brasses on the streets are well dodgy and will do the diversion while their mate tries to dip you routine...so keep your 10 euros note in your undies woody
agree the harbour day timewise is a decent distraction
we eneded up at the same ripper joint two nights running , the bouncer served up and alot of fun was had...

Apart from all the usual nightlife stuff I'd recommend going to the old harbour during the day and getting a fish sandwich/baguette and a beer or a Hamburg Cola.
Simple pleasures innit?

Been twice, second visit was earlier this year. The elevated subway by the waterfront offers some nice views. We had transport passes and they included the ferries, caught one that went a fair way up the Elbe. The Silbersack bar on the Reeperbahn is "atmospheric", it's been used in at least one film before. Very smoky in there though. On the other side of the Reeperbahn is a decent venue, Molotov and next to that the local beer Astra have their own bar.

Cracking place, but as some others said the Reeperbahn can be very lively at night. Brasses are not my thing but as people said plenty of them about and some look stunning. If you want to go to the Lake during the day and sit outside there is a place called 'Alex' that was nice. If it is a nice day, maybe even get down to the Hamburg Beach Club. You cant really go wrong but there was also a very good Irish bar at the start of the Reeperbahn with a good crowd. When I was there I got lost in some bar trying to find the gents and went through the wrong door upstairs and ended up in a brothel - it is everywhere there. Try some draft Franziskaner on there too. Lovely Weissbier.
